Back Pain After Sitting All Day: What's Happening?

2026-07-10 5 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Gregory Martin

If your back complains every evening after a day at a desk, the chair is only part of the story. Sitting all day compresses the spine into one position for hours, tightens the muscles that flex the hips, and lets the deep muscles that support the spine switch off. Move, and the whole system springs back quickly. Sit for eight hours, and it takes a while to unwind.

It's not just posture, either. Sustained sitting reduces blood flow and loading through the spinal discs, and countless small static stretches teach your body to hold tension. The result is the classic pattern: stiff when you stand up, aching by mid-afternoon, worse at the end of the week.

What helps between visits? Build movement into your day in small doses: stand and walk at least every 30 to 45 minutes, adjust your screen so you're not craning forward, and add a few gentle daily movements for the hips and mid-back. Even a two-minute walk after lunch counts for more than an expensive chair.

When sitting-related discomfort becomes a regular thing, an evaluation is worth it. Dr. Gregory Martin sees patients in Sparta, New Jersey, and takes the time to look at the whole picture: your chair, your habits and how your spine actually moves. From there, care can be tailored to what your days really look like.

The goal isn't to ban sitting. It's to make sure your body can handle the sitting you do.
