Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy: What to Expect

2026-10-14 6 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Gregory Martin

Chiropractic care is generally considered safe during pregnancy when provided by a practitioner trained in prenatal care. The short answer: expect a gentler, adapted approach, and always coordinate with your obstetric provider.

Pregnancy changes how the body carries weight and moves. As the baby grows, the pelvis, lower back and posture all shift, which can contribute to lower back and pelvic discomfort. That's a common reason pregnant patients look for help, and chiropractic care is one option many consider.

A narrative review of the literature concluded that chiropractic evaluation and treatment during pregnancy may be considered a safe and effective means of treating common musculoskeletal symptoms, and it reported no adverse effects of treatment. The American Pregnancy Association notes there are no known contraindications to chiropractic care during pregnancy, while advising patients to inform their chiropractor and coordinate with their obstetric provider.

Care is adapted for pregnant patients in a few practical ways. Instead of lying flat on the stomach, you'll typically be positioned on your side, semi-reclined, or seated. Many offices use tables with drop-away sections or pillows with belly cutouts so the abdomen is never under pressure. Techniques tend to be low-force and gentle, with no direct pressure on the abdomen.

Dr. Gregory Martin's approach is the same as with any patient: he starts by listening and asking about your history and concerns, then examines how your spine and pelvis move. He'll explain what he's doing and why, and he'll be clear about what falls within his scope and what should be discussed with your doctor or midwife.

Before starting chiropractic care during pregnancy, it's always wise to tell your chiropractor about your pregnancy and to check with your obstetric provider. Every pregnancy is different, and your care should be planned with your full health picture in mind.

If you're pregnant and dealing with back or pelvic discomfort, an evaluation is a reasonable next step. Dr. Gregory Martin has practiced chiropractic since 1996 and sees patients in Sparta, New Jersey. Call or text (973) 699-4100 to schedule an appointment.
