Chiropractic Care for Older Adults: What to Expect
2026-10-12 5 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Gregory Martin
Chiropractic care is generally safe and well-tolerated for older adults, and it may help some seniors with back discomfort when paired with appropriate exercise. Recent research reviews of chiropractic care in adults over 55 have found no catastrophic adverse events, with the most common side effects being mild muscle soreness or stiffness.
Why do older adults consider chiropractic care? The reasons are usually practical: stiffness that slows the morning, back or neck discomfort that gets in the way of gardening, golf or walking, and a desire to stay active without relying on medication. Chiropractic care is one of the non-drug options that clinical guidelines list among first-line choices for low back pain, alongside exercise and other conservative approaches.
What does the evidence say? A 2026 systematic review of adverse events in adults over 55 receiving chiropractic care found no catastrophic events across the studies reviewed; reported events were mostly mild-to-moderate symptoms like muscle soreness and stiffness. A 2025 systematic review of musculoskeletal manipulation in older adults similarly found no serious adverse events, while describing the effectiveness evidence as still limited. For low back pain specifically, one trial found that spinal manipulation combined with home exercise produced a meaningful reduction in pain at 12 weeks compared with exercise alone. The honest summary: safe and well-tolerated, with modest benefit for low back pain, and care is most effective when it includes appropriate exercise.
What should an older patient expect? A thorough history that covers medications, conditions like osteoporosis, blood thinners, recent falls or fractures, and any past surgeries. That history determines whether and how care proceeds, and a responsible chiropractor coordinates with your primary care doctor when needed. The approach is typically gentler and adjusted to your body, and you should always understand what is being done and why.
Some situations belong with a medical doctor first: new back or neck pain with a fever, unexplained weight loss, pain after a fall, sudden weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Those need medical evaluation before any manual care. Dr. Gregory Martin has practiced chiropractic since 1996 and sees patients of all ages at Gregory Martin Chiropractic at 283 Sparta Avenue in Sparta and at Speedwell Family Chiropractic at 520 Speedwell Avenue in Morris Plains. If you are an older adult wondering whether chiropractic care fits your situation, an evaluation that starts with listening is a reasonable next step. Call or text (973) 699-4100.
