What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Visit

2026-09-10 5 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Gregory Martin

Your first chiropractic visit is an evaluation, not a commitment. You will spend more time than a typical follow-up: a conversation about your history and what you are feeling, a physical and movement-based exam, and a clear explanation of what Dr. Gregory Martin finds and what he recommends. Treatment may begin the same day or on a follow-up, and there is no pressure to continue.

In most cases you do not need a referral to see a chiropractor. Chiropractors are licensed to evaluate and treat patients directly, though some insurance plans have their own rules about referrals or authorization, so it is worth checking with your plan if that matters to you.

Plan on paperwork covering your health history and medications, then a conversation: when the discomfort started, where it is, what makes it better or worse and what you have already tried. Dr. Greg then assesses your posture, how your spine and joints move, and your range of motion, checking for any red flags that might point to another provider.

From there he explains what he finds in plain English and lays out a plan, or tells you honestly if chiropractic care is not the right first step for your situation. You decide what happens next, with no obligation.

Dr. Greg has practiced since 1996 and sees patients at his office in Sparta, New Jersey. If you have been wondering whether an evaluation is worth it, the first visit is the way to find out with your own situation in view.
