How to Choose a Chiropractor: Questions Worth Asking Before Your First Visit
2026-09-23 6 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Gregory Martin
A good chiropractor is easy to recognize before you even get on the table: they listen, they explain what they find in plain language, and they tell you honestly whether chiropractic care is the right next step or whether another provider would serve you better. Licensing is the floor. Chiropractors must be licensed to practice in New Jersey, just as in every state, and a licensed practitioner has completed the required training. From there, choosing comes down to fit.
Ask what experience they have with your specific problem. Back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, sports injuries and post-accident care each ask different things of a clinician. A doctor who works with active people and athletes regularly brings a different mix of skills and habits than one who mostly sees chronic stiffness, and it is fair to ask.
Ask about the plan before you commit. How often does the doctor expect to see you, and why? How long before you might notice a difference, and how will progress be checked? The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) advises being wary of recommendations for long, fixed treatment schedules that are not grounded in how you respond. A plan should be explained, reasonable and adjusted as you go, not a flat package for everyone.
Ask what happens if chiropractic is not the answer. A straight answer here tells you a lot about a practice. There are situations where spinal manipulation is not appropriate, and conditions where imaging or a medical provider is the better path. A doctor who refers comfortably is practicing good care, not losing a patient.
On the safety question: research reviews find spinal manipulation is generally safe when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner. Mild soreness or stiffness afterward is the most common side effect and usually settles within about a day. Serious complications are rare, and an NCCIH-funded analysis of Medicare claims found the risk of stroke after chiropractic visits for neck pain was similar to the risk after visits to a primary care physician.
What should the first visit feel like? Usually a conversation about your history, habits and goals, a movement-based examination of how your spine and joints actually move, and an honest recommendation. No one should pressure you into a long series of visits before explaining why they are needed.
