How to Lift Without Hurting Your Back: Practical Technique

2026-10-16 5 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Gregory Martin

The safe way to lift a heavy object is to use your legs, not your back: get close to the load, plant your feet, keep your back straight, and let your leg muscles do the work. Medical sources agree on this basic recipe, and it applies to everything from moving boxes to picking up a child or loading the car for a weekend trip.

Here is the technique in practical steps. Before you lift, plan the move and clear the path. Stand close to the object with your feet about shoulder-width apart. Bend at your knees and hips, not at your waist, keeping your back as straight as is comfortable. Tighten your stomach muscles before you lift. Then lift with your legs, keeping the load close to your body. Do not twist your back while lifting or carrying; pivot with your feet instead. Set the object down the same way, by squatting with your knees and hips.

What to avoid matters just as much. Reaching for a load instead of moving close to it, twisting while holding weight, lifting from an awkward position, and trying to move more than you can handle are the patterns that turn an ordinary task into a back injury. Cleveland Clinic's guidance for people with low back pain is to avoid lifting more than about 30 pounds, avoid awkward or very heavy loads, and get help or use a mechanical aid for anything heavy.

Good technique matters because most everyday back injuries are mechanical: a sudden strain on muscles, joints and discs that were put in a bad position under load. Prevention is the first line of defense, and for most people it means learning and repeating the same leg-driven squat pattern until it becomes automatic.

If lifting is a regular part of your days, at work, at home or in the yard, and your back complains afterward, that is worth having looked at. Dr. Gregory Martin will evaluate how your spine actually moves and connect that to the lifting demands in your life, with practical guidance you can use the same week. Dr. Greg has practiced since 1996 and sees patients at his office in Sparta, New Jersey.
