Is Chiropractic Care Safe? What Patients Should Know

2026-10-12 5 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Gregory Martin

For most patients, chiropractic care performed by a trained, licensed chiropractor is generally safe. The most common side effects are mild and short-lived, and serious complications are rare. That is the short answer, and it is the one supported by research reviews from organizations like the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH).

What are the common side effects? Temporary soreness or stiffness in the treated area is the most common, and some people notice a mild headache or tiredness after an adjustment. These are usually minor and settle within a day or two. NCCIH notes that transient mild-to-moderate side effects often occur and typically resolve quickly, and that spinal manipulation appears to be a generally safe treatment for low back pain when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner.

Are there serious risks? Serious complications from spinal manipulation are rare but possible, which is why screening matters. Research has examined a possible association between neck manipulation and cervical arterial dissection, a rare arterial tear that can lead to stroke, though a direct cause-and-effect link has not been established. An NCCIH-funded analysis of Medicare claims found the risk of stroke after chiropractic visits for neck pain was similar to the risk after visits to a primary care physician. The likelihood of a serious side effect may be higher in people with underlying health conditions that raise their risk, which is exactly why a careful history comes first.

What does this mean for your visit? A responsible chiropractor starts with your history: medications, past injuries, surgeries and any conditions that could affect how your spine responds to care. That screening determines whether spinal manipulation is appropriate for you, and whether another approach or provider is a better first step. You should always feel free to ask questions before treatment begins.
