Neck Pain From Working at a Computer: Why It Happens and What Helps

2026-09-10 5 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Gregory Martin

Neck pain from working at a computer is usually the result of sustained forward head posture: hours of holding your head angled toward a screen that sits too low. Over a full workday that position loads the neck and upper back, and it leaves them stiff, tight and sore by the end of the day.

The numbers help explain why. The average adult head weighs around 10 to 12 pounds. When it sits directly over the shoulders, the neck manages it comfortably. Lean it forward a few inches, and the load rises sharply. Add the tendency to hunch toward a laptop, and the shoulders and upper back tighten as well.

Simple desk changes can help a lot. Set the top of your monitor at or just below eye level, roughly an arm's length away, so you are not craning forward. Choose a chair that supports your lower back and lets your feet rest flat. Keep your elbows close to your sides and your wrists straight while typing, and build short breaks in: stand, walk or gently move every 30 to 45 minutes.

When desk-related neck discomfort becomes a regular thing, an evaluation is worth it. Dr. Gregory Martin looks at how your neck actually moves, not just how it feels, and connects that to your desk, your habits and your stress. Chiropractic care may help some patients by easing stiffness and improving neck mobility, often alongside small practical changes to the workspace.

Dr. Greg has practiced since 1996 and sees patients at his office in Sparta, New Jersey. If your neck complains at the end of every workday, that is worth having looked at close to home.
