Posture and Pain: What's Worth Paying Attention To?

2026-09-14 6 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Gregory Martin

There is no single perfect posture that protects you from pain, and research does not support the idea that slouching by itself causes back or neck problems. Reviews have found no consistent differences in sitting or standing posture between people with and without back pain. What matters far more is movement: how long you stay in one position, how you load your joints, and how you move through your day.

That may be a relief if you have spent years being told to sit up straight. Experts now point out that staying in any one static position for hours, whether it looks good or bad, is what leaves muscles tense and stiff. Desk work, long drives and endless phone scrolling all have that in common: sustained stillness, not a specific curvature of the spine.

Practical habits matter more than postural perfection. Change position regularly, stand and move at least every 30 to 45 minutes when you are working at a desk, keep your screen near eye level so you are not craning forward, and build gentle strength and daily movement into your routine. These are the changes with the best evidence behind them, and they cost nothing.

Where does chiropractic care fit? Dr. Gregory Martin does not promise to fix your posture. Instead, he assesses how your spine and joints actually move and where they are restricted, and he connects that to your habits, your work and your activity level. Improving joint mobility and easing stiffness from sustained positions may help some patients, as one part of a broader plan built around movement and strength.

The bottom line: think of posture as a movement problem, not a punishment. If you spend long hours in one position and notice nagging back or neck discomfort, the most useful next step is an evaluation that looks at how you move, not a lecture on where to hold your shoulders.
