Recovering After a Sports Injury: A Practical, Modern Approach
2026-09-08 6 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Gregory Martin
Recovery from a sports injury is about more than resting until the pain goes away. The modern, evidence-based approach is to protect the area through the acute phase, then progressively load and strengthen it as healing allows, using pain as the guide. The goal is getting back to training safely, not just feeling better for a day or two.
Older advice centered on long rest and liberal ice. Current guidance is more active: early gentle movement and protection, then a gradual return to loading the tissue through strength and functional work. Activity is usually built back in step by step, and the decision to return to full sport is based on how you move and function, not just on the number of weeks that have passed.
Chiropractic care can be a useful part of that picture. Dr. Gregory Martin is the official chiropractor of Parisi's Speed School of Morris Plains, so he works with athletes who want to keep training. Care typically focuses on restoring joint and spinal mobility and reducing mechanical stress, as a complement to the strength and rehabilitation work, not a replacement for it.
A sports-oriented visit starts with what is happening in your training: what hurts, when it hurts and what you have coming up. Then comes an evaluation of the involved joints, an adjustment where appropriate, and practical guidance for the week ahead. It respects the fact that 'stop everything' is often not useful advice for an athlete.
The athletes Dr. Greg sees range from school-age to adult, at his office in Sparta, New Jersey, and through his work with Parisi's Speed School in Morris Plains. If an injury is keeping you out of the sport you love, care that understands the athlete's math is worth looking into.
