Sciatica and Sitting: Why Your Chair Can Make Leg Pain Worse

2026-09-21 5 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Gregory Martin

Yes, long stretches of sitting can make sciatica feel worse. Sitting increases pressure on the lower spine and can irritate the sciatic nerve as it runs through the lower back and pelvis, and it keeps the hips and hamstrings shortened and tense. That combination is why leg pain often flares during long drives, a full day at a desk, or a stretch of back-to-back meetings.

Sciatica is pain that travels along the sciatic nerve, the large nerve that runs from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg. When you sit for long periods, the discs and joints of the lower back carry more load and the nerve sits in a more stretched position. Add an unsupportive chair or a slouched, forward lean, and the irritation can build over hours.

Position changes can take real pressure off. Sit all the way back in your chair with support behind your lower back (a small cushion or a rolled towel works well), keep your feet flat on the floor with knees near hip level, raise the monitor near eye level so you are not leaning forward, and avoid crossing your legs or perching on the edge of the seat. The goal is to change the load on the spine, not to hold one perfect pose.

Breaks matter as much as position. Standing, walking or moving gently every 20 to 30 minutes gives the spine a chance to shift position and the nerve a break. Set a timer, take phone calls standing, or use a standing desk for part of the day. Even short interruptions help.

If sciatic pain keeps returning, is getting worse, or is interfering with work or sleep, an evaluation is a reasonable next step. See a medical professional promptly if you have loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, progressive weakness in a leg, or symptoms that started right after a fall or car accident.
