Shoulder Pain From Desk Work: Why It Happens and What May Help

2026-09-28 6 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Gregory Martin

Shoulder pain from desk work is usually about sustained posture rather than a single injury. Hours of sitting with the shoulders rolled forward and the head reaching toward a low screen puts the shoulder joint in a position where soft tissues can get compressed, and that pattern sits behind many cases of shoulder discomfort.

Health professionals call the most common version shoulder impingement: the rotator cuff tendons or the bursa get squeezed between bones in the shoulder, especially with overhead or behind-the-back movements. It can feel like a deep ache on the outside of the shoulder, pain lifting the arm overhead or reaching behind, or trouble sleeping on the affected side. Desk work, repetitive overhead work and poor posture are common contributors.

What helps first is the workspace. Harvard Health points to ergonomics as a fixable trigger: raise the screen so you are not looking down, keep your elbows near your sides and roughly at a right angle, and give your shoulders and arms real breaks through the day. Movement matters more than finding the perfect position, because no position is good for eight straight hours.

Gentle stretching and strengthening help many people: chest stretches for the tight muscles on the front, and light upper back and rotator cuff work for the muscles that hold the shoulder in place. Chiropractic care may help some patients as well, by improving how the neck and upper back move and reducing strain that radiates into the shoulder, and it complements good ergonomics rather than replacing them.

The neck and shoulder are closely connected, which is why shoulder pain that does not improve often deserves an evaluation of both. Dr. Gregory Martin has practiced chiropractic since 1996 and sees patients at his office in Sparta, New Jersey. He takes a careful history, looks at how you move and tells you honestly whether chiropractic care fits or whether another approach is the better first step.

Sharp shoulder pain after a fall or lifting injury, pain with significant weakness, or pain that keeps worsening deserve a medical evaluation first. But for the common desk-related pattern, an evaluation that includes the neck and upper back is a reasonable next step. Call or text (973) 699-4100 to schedule one.
