Staying Active in Sussex County: Trails, Lakes and Outdoor Options Near Sparta

2026-09-16 5 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Gregory Martin

You do not have to travel far from Sparta to stay active outdoors. Sussex County is filled with state parks, lakes and trails within a short drive of Gregory Martin Chiropractic at 283 Sparta Avenue in Sparta, and fall is one of the best seasons to use them.

In Sparta itself, Lake Mohawk offers a boardwalk, beaches and walking routes, and Sparta Glen Park has a short gorge trail with a waterfall off Glen Road. Both are minutes from the office and easy to fit in around work, school or appointments.

A little further out, the options keep building. Kittatinny Valley State Park near Newton has hiking, fishing and paddling on Lake Aeroflex and Gardner's Pond, about 15 minutes from Sparta. Wawayanda State Park in Vernon offers more than 60 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails plus swimming at Wawayanda Lake. Swartswood State Park and Mountain Creek, with its ski and bike terrain, sit within a similar reach, and the Appalachian Trail ridges run along the county to the west.

Why does this matter on a chiropractor's website? Because the point of care here is to keep people moving. Lakes, trails and slopes reward consistent movement, and a body with mobile joints and well-managed aches gets to enjoy them. When stiffness, back pain or an old injury starts getting in the way of your hikes, training or long weekends outdoors, an evaluation is worth considering before the habit slips.

Chiropractic care does not promise to bulletproof you for the trail, but it may help some people by improving how well the spine and joints move and easing the stiffness that comes with sustained activity. Dr. Greg looks at how your back and neck are moving, connects that to your habits and your season, and tells you honestly what he finds.

If you are planning a fall season of hiking, paddling or training and want a quick check of how your back and neck are moving, Dr. Gregory Martin has practiced chiropractic since 1996 and sees patients at Gregory Martin Chiropractic at 283 Sparta Avenue in Sparta and at Speedwell Family Chiropractic at 520 Speedwell Avenue in Morris Plains.
