What Causes Lower Back Pain?

2026-08-14 6 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Gregory Martin

Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people in New Jersey (and everywhere else) pick up the phone to find a chiropractor. If you've been dealing with a sour back, you're not alone, and most of the time it's not a mystery that requires a scan to start understanding.

In most cases, lower back discomfort is mechanical: it's about how the spine, muscles, joints and connective tissue move and hold up under load. Common contributors include heavy or awkward lifting, prolonged sitting at a desk or in the car, sports and work strain, posture habits and older injuries that never fully settled.

What does that mean for you? It means the cause often shows up in your movement patterns and daily habits, which is exactly what a spine and movement evaluation looks at. A chiropractor trained to assess how your back actually moves can often identify which positions and activities are stressing it.

That doesn't mean every back ache needs treatment. Some settle on their own with rest, gentle movement and better ergonomics. But when pain lingers, keeps returning or gets in the way of things you enjoy, an evaluation is a reasonable next step.

Dr. Gregory Martin has evaluated and cared for patients with back discomfort since 1996 at his office in Sparta, New Jersey. His approach starts with listening: your history, your habits and what makes it worse. Then he examines your spine and movement, and tells you honestly whether chiropractic care fits or whether another provider would be a better first stop.

If you're wondering whether your lower back pain is something to address, that's a good question to ask a professional with an actual look at your situation. Call or text (973) 699-4100 to schedule an evaluation.
