What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
2026-09-14 6 min read · Reviewed by Dr. Gregory Martin
A chiropractic adjustment, also called spinal manipulation, is a technique in which a chiropractor uses their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, quick force to a joint of the spine, with the goal of improving how that joint moves and functions. It is the treatment most people picture when they think of chiropractic care, and it is one tool among several in a typical visit.
What is it used for? Spinal manipulation is most commonly used and studied for low back pain, and it is also used and studied for neck pain and headaches. Research reviews point to moderate-quality evidence that spinal manipulation may lead to small improvements in pain and function for low back pain, usually as one part of a broader plan rather than a standalone fix.
Is it safe? Spinal manipulation is considered generally safe when performed by a trained and licensed chiropractor. The most common side effect is mild soreness in the treated area, which typically fades within a day or two, and serious complications are very rare. That is why an evaluation should always come first: a thorough history and examination help determine whether an adjustment is appropriate for you at all.
What a visit actually looks like with Dr. Gregory Martin: a conversation about your history first, then a movement-based exam of how your spine and joints move. If an adjustment is appropriate, Dr. Greg explains what he is doing and why. If it is not, he says so. There is no pressure, and you can ask questions at any point.
An adjustment is not a guarantee, and it is not a cure for every ache. It is a tool for improving joint mobility and easing mechanical strain, and it works best as one part of care that also includes movement, strength and good daily habits. Dr. Greg has practiced chiropractic since 1996 and takes the time to explain what he finds in plain English.
If you have been wondering what chiropractic care actually involves, an evaluation is the honest way to find out. Dr. Greg sees patients at Gregory Martin Chiropractic in Sparta and at Speedwell Family Chiropractic in Morris Plains. Call or text (973) 699-4100 to schedule an evaluation.
